QM from Scratch

Research Unit Theoretical Chemistry

QM from Scratch

Quantum mechanics from scratch: Implement your own numeric solvers for wavefunctions in one dimension, for the wavefunctions of a hydrogen atom, as well as simple diatomic systems with your own Hartree-Fock solver.

Drought Monitoring

This TU Cookbook covers microwave remote sensing for drought monitoring. Microwave sensors penetrate soils to retrieve soil moisture data. Microwave records from EUMETSAT scatterometers (H SAF ASCAT) on Metop satellites can be used to derive long soil moisture timeseries (2007 to recent). This provides a climatic baseline for dry spell comparison. Applications are particularly valuable for agriculture and crop planning.

This cookbook is a curated collection of interactive Jupyter Notebooks designed to teach students how to identify, diagnose, and mitigate "bad data smells" before training machine learning models. Through hands-on modules covering data cleaning, correlation analysis, and data diversity, students learn to handle real-world issues like extreme sparsity, hidden redundancies, and imbalanced network traffic.

Urban Geometry and Open Data
This cookbook treats the city as a dataset and Vienna as the default study area. Students begin by pulling live building footprints and street networks directly from OpenStreetMap using osmnx, then graduate to the city's own open data portal (data.wien.gv.at), where hundreds of WFS endpoints deliver zoning, green space, and district boundaries without authentication. The middle notebooks shift from data acquisition to spatial analysis: compactness ratios and elongation metrics quantify urban fabric geometry, betweenness centrality reveals which streets carry the most topological load, and choropleth maps turn raw numbers into spatial arguments. The capstone pits two Vienna districts against each other — Gründerzeit Margareten versus post-war Donaustadt — and forces students to read the morphological difference in the numbers before they can see it on the map.
